Everyone has guessed every breed you can imagine. Every conversation is like this:
“Oh what breed is she?”
“A mutt.”
“What?”
“A mutt. A mix. It’s a dog.”
“She looks like she has a lot of [whatever] in her!”
“Well her mom was a wheaten terrier mix and the pups look nothing like her. And no one knows about dad. I think she’s definitely a dog, though.”

Luna is a great dog name. I spent my college years telling landlords my two pits were terrier mixes in order to avoid conflicts. When the vet came on Thursday night to send Lola on her final journey he asked if she was a a bulldog mix. I said no, she’s a pitbull. He asked if he should give her a tranquilizer, and I said no, she’s a pitbull, she won’t try to bite you. I was right.

My wife’s aunt is really into the DNA tests to find what ethnicity you are. I’m like, that’s not how ethnicity or genetics works. The nations we have today mean nothing when it comes to genetics.

Thanks. There’s a boring story about that naming. So boring I’m passing out just remember it.
Re: pitbulls — Someone suggested to me that a local doggy daycare was good because they “didn’t allow pitbulls.” All that did was make choose to not give them my business.

They started as tribes. DNA can tell us what tribes we originated from.

One of the local shelters near me has an automatic kill policy on all pits/pit mixes. They do the standard hold to see if an owner shows up, but if no one does, the dogs aren’t placed for adoption, no matter how sweet tempered they are. It pisses me off to no end.

What one of the workers told me is supposedly it’s to prevent them from being used for animal cruelty, i.e.: for dog fights.
That’s still bullshit, if you ask me. But I also don’t know what kind of data they may or may not have about how often that actually occurs.

They started as tribes which didn’t live in the nations we now recognize. Any measureable genetic differences would have started around 10k years ago, long before any nation existed . Also, the Romans did a pretty good job of inserting their DNA into most European tribes. Plus there’s more genetic commonality between ethnicities and races than among them. Lastly, most groups doing these DNA “analysis” think native americans are one of the lost tribes of Israel. If a DNA test tell you your ancestors are from a nation that didn’t exist 10k years ago, it’s a bs test.

As someone who loves pits, has rescued several, and has had lots of friends with pits, I’m not that opposed to a daycare not allowing pits. Pits are great family dogs, but they were specifically bred for over a century to fight other dogs. Both my pits love other dogs and show no dog aggression, but that is definitely not the norm. The fear of pits going after people is overblown, but they definitely have a propensity to go after other dogs. You can’t really blame a pit for going after another dog, as that’s what they have been bred to do. Also, if they do get into a fight, they aren’t like other dogs where you can just scare them with a hose and pull them apart. They simply just do not stop.
My friend’s pit attacked my pit one evening (it was completely our fault for not introducing them properly) and my friend ended up having to choke out his dog in order to get her to pass out and let go. It’s the owner’s responsibility to not put them in a situation where they attack another dog, and fights can’t be blamed on the dog.
Even though both my pits got along from the get go, I kenneled them for the first few years I had them so they couldn’t get into a fight while I was at school or work.
Now with that said, if you do find a daycare that allows pits, they probably have a very well trained staff and good insurance, as they know they’re taking on a bit of a liablity having pits with dogs they aren’t familiar with.

Both my pits were adopted from foster homes where people took them in temporarily after the shelters they were in were going to kill them. It pisses me off when people buy dogs from breeders and stores when other dogs are being killed for not having a home.

Fair enough. I guess it’s more of my limited anecdotal experience. I’ve met plenty of awful dogs, but I can recall maybe 1 pit (and yeah, it was a pretty scary situation for sure). Conversely, I’ve met many nice pits. One time my neighbor’s pit got off leash and then my damned puppy sprung loose (yes, 100% my fault and I feel bad) and ran halfway into their yard. They came face to face and the pit started wagging its tail like a helicopter and whining loudly. They sniffed for a few seconds before we all sprang into action and retrieved our dogs. That could have been an awful situation was luckily just two energetic pupper-dogs.

Yup. And the same thing is starting to happen with cats, too, as people are realizing you can breed interesting cat exotics just like you can dogs. Scottish fold, bengals, house cat-serval (African wildcat) mixes, etc.
I got my mutt of a domestic shorthair tabby from a shelter. And he is the awesomest, snuggliest, most social cat ever. Totally worth it.

Yeah, that’s how my Lola was. When I first got her I had a random German Shepherd run up to us. She starts wagging her tail and licking him. Then a few years ago I had about five chihuahuas ambush my dogs and I while out walking. They were actually trying to bite my dogs. Both pits just sat down and lifted their heads to keep their faces from getting bit. I had to yell at the chihuahuas to scare them off as my dogs wouldn’t do anything. About a year ago I saw Lola in my backyard with something in her mouth. She puts it down then starts licking it and staring at it. I went to check it out and it was a bird that looked as if one of my chicken had gotten to it (chickens are very aggressive towards all forms of life). I’m guessing she went into the chicken coup and grabbed it out. Sweetest goddamn dog ever.

Yep. We have a cat now and he is amazing. He was found as a stray and had all sorts of burns on him. Now he is healed up and very stout. One of the most beautiful cats I’ve ever seen. I feel bad because he wants to be outside. I may just let him do his thing and keep a food bowl outside. He thinks he is a dog, and tries to play with my pit. He will cuddle with my dog as well. Here’s a pic from a few months ago.

That’s pretty common in shelters in South Texas. We ended up with our Otis after he was abandoned in our neighborhood and all the nearby shelters either just wouldn’t take him down or said they’d put him after the hold because “he looks like he might have some put in him.” Ridiculous. I think it comes from a combination of unfortunate factors. Here in San Antonio we do have a large population of unwanted pits, especially in the poorer areas of town. Many of them are aggressive, because they are left outside all day to protect property or are acquired specifly for the intimidation factor. Or even worse for fighting. Then this myth that they are bad dogs from birth gets perpetuated. There’s a lot of work to do to get the shelters to take them and it needs to happen on different fronts - teaching that no breed is an inherently “dangerous breed,” and also cutting down on the population of homeless pits overall.
